Abstract

Faced with the challenge of an aging workforce in the nuclear industry and the influx of junior engineers hired, AtkinsRéalis needed a way to transfer knowledge as quickly as possible to prepare for future projects.

As part of the AtkinsRéalis nuclear technical training program, the CANDUapp was developed in- house, in tandem with subject matter experts to bridge the knowledge gap between engineers of varying experience levels. The application provides an immersive training environment where users can view and interact with various CANDU Three-Dimensional (3D) models created by experienced engineers, review technical documentation and drawings linked to the company’s internal database, and compare between various CANDU plants in one place. Both senior and junior engineers have saved many hours of labour by collaborating in a shared environment.

Additionally, the CANDUapp improves access to information by providing easy access to 3D models without having to install and learn new tools and technology. Future developments of the application will include mobile App, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality support.
