Identifying Items Important to Safety for a Cask Facility at Chalk River Laboratories
Main Article Content
Abstract
Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is developing a Cask Facility that will allow for nuclear material to be transferred between on- and off-site transportation containers. This Cask Facility will support current and future Environmental Remediation Management (ERM) and Science & Technology (S&T) projects at Chalk River Laboratories. The structures, systems and components (SSC) that make up this Cask Facility were evaluated to assess which should be classified as an item important to safety (IIS). This designation is used at CNL, in alignment with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) requirements, to identify SSC important to safety. Identification of IIS is a key component of arguments made in the facility safety analysis report (SAR) that is submitted to the CNSC as part of the licensing process. The methodology employed in identifying which SSC is important to safety for this Cask Facility is described in this paper.
