Exploring SMR Applications in Brazil Amid Energy and Environmental Challenges
Main Article Content
Abstract
Current MMR technology brings forth essential traits Brazil is looking for as it diversifies its hydroelectric-dominated energy portfolio: flexible supply capabilities, long-term energy security, economic resilience, mobile deployment, as well as renewable and carbon-free power generation. Modular reactor designs, exemplified by NuScale’s VOYGR and UNSC’s MMR, provide solutions to remote power generation problems that Brazil is facing amidst its most severe droughts and black outs in the century. It is estimated that one million people lack access to electricity in the Amazon Basin, and another three million rely on portable diesel generators. This exploration consists of evaluation of current energy and environmental challenges, as well as the incentives behind displacing diesel power generation in remote communities. The paper will focus on the advantages and value add of SMR applications.
