Flow Obstruction Detection using Ultrasonic Transducers
Main Article Content
Abstract
Molten salt nuclear reactors are part of the new “Generation IV” of nuclear reactors being researched. Improved monitoring capabilities are crucial for the commercialization of this technology. Obstructions within a pipe can cause the flow to deviate from expectations, and in the context of a nuclear reactor, this can have catastrophic consequences. In this paper, we propose a non-intrusive procedure for detecting obstructions within a length of pipe. Ultrasonic measurement techniques can reliably detect the presence of turbulence via phase modulation. We are developing a program to simulate ultrasonic measurements of turbulent flow through an obstructed section of piping. Using this data, we plan to apply machine learning methodologies to detect the presence of an obstruction.
