Abstract

The interest in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to provide a cost effective, safe, and reliable supply of electricity for remote, off-grid, communities and remote mining operations has been growing rapidly worldwide. SMRs can replace diesel generators that currently supply the electricity and reduce GHG emissions. At the same time, the SMR will enable affordable opportunities to improve the quality of life for residents.

Pinawa is the host community for the Whiteshell Laboratories. This nuclear research site is well suited to host one or more SMR demonstration reactors. Pinawa has a vision for providing a comprehensive demonstration that will become an effective tool for encouraging remote communities and mine operations to embrace this technology. The vision includes Pinawa being powered by the SMR and becoming the off-grid Demonstration Remote Community. The project will include facilities to grow fresh fruit and vegetables year round in a harsh climate as well as other quality of life improvements. The Demonstration Remote Community will also include a Green Energy Park that will demonstrate the integration of energy supplied by the SMR and renewable energy systems and include battery storage and hydrogen production in the mix. This will be appealing to many mining companies who have already begun to invest in renewable energy to reduce GHG emissions.
