Abstract

Two carbon steel devices shaped like cylindrical cups with different wall thicknesses weldedon a pipe containing hydrogen gas were tested and modeled to investigate the effect of wall thickness on the hydrogen accumulation inside them. The results indicated that the hydrogen accumulation inside both cups raises the possibility of a self-moderating-pressure design. The difference in wall thicknesses does not have a significant effect on hydrogen pressure at steady state inside the cups - the experimental plateau pressures are approximately similar for both wall thicknesses. The modelling predicts the experimental results very well.
