Preparing for a Nuclear Power Plant: Ghana's Forward March

Abstract
Ghana joined the International Atomic Energy Agency shortly after gaining independence. The peaceful use of nuclear power has remained as a national focus. In 1961, the Kwabenya Nuclear Reactor Project was started. The acquisition of a 2 MW Reactor enabled research and training to be carried out. By an Act of Parliament, the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission was given legal status to carry on with a mandate of peaceful use of nuclear techniques' recent times, there has been positive change and growth. A Graduate School set up in 2006 by the Commission has contributed to the building of much needed human capacity. Definite steps towards meeting required milestones have been taken, including the setting up of an independent Nuclear Regulatory Authority. This Paper highlights the forward march of Ghana in the peaceful use of nuclear techniques, the possibility of setting up a nuclear power plant.
