Abstract

SEALER-UK is a 55 MWe lead-cooled reactor with uranium nitride fuel, operating without fuel reload for 25 years. Through passive safety features, automated manufacture and deployment in a 220 MWe four-unit configuration, it is foreseen to produce base-load power at a competitive cost on markets where carbon-tax is implemented. In this contribution, we present the major technical parameters of the reactor design, its performance during design basis and beyond design basis accidents, as well as the approach to automated manufacture. The potential deployment of the reactor in Canada is discussed in terms of replacing coal power plants in Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
