Abstract

There are a very large number of developing Small Modular Reactor designs, however Canada does not have the infrastructure or market for more than a few, perhaps one per market niche. To be successful leading these new technologies to market, potential Canadian owners, operators and stakeholders need to combine our resources and agree on design selection. This paper will outline the rationale for this strategy, including scientific resource and laboratory R&D limitations, regulatory and operator capacity, supply chain, market demand and opportunity for return on investment. In addition, some key strategic questions that should drive technology selection will be presented.
