Abstract

Reliable safety-related structures, systems and components (SSC) are necessary to ensure that the risk to members of the public from a nuclear incident at a nuclear power plant (NPP) is low. The purpose of the draft CSA N290.9 Standard, scheduled for publication in June 2019, is to define the requirements for a reliability program at a NPP and to define the activities that integrate the reliability and maintenance programs for safety-related SSC at a NPP. The draft Standard captures classification methodologies currently employed by Canadian NPPs and provides an integrating framework between current operating practices and CNSC REGDOC-2.6.1 and REGDOC-2.6.2. The draft Standard complements other existing CSA Nuclear Standards related to reactor safety and risk management (N290B series) by:
  • addressing reliability and availability requirements for SSC that are required under both DBA and BDBA conditions; and
  • providing a common approach around SSC important to safety that could be required under all reactor states including BDBA conditions.
The presentation will highlight the CSA process for standards development and describe the drafting of CSA N290.9 in detail.
