Abstract

In 2014, the Cavendish Fluor Partnership were awarded the contract to decommission 12 Magnox sites in the UK which presented the challenges of taking all 12 sites to a safe state known as Care & Maintenance by 2028, retrieving all intermediate level waste and delivering cost savings. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of the decommissioning work conducted as part of the contract, collaboration with UK regulators to achieve the Partnership's goals and detailed technical reviews of some of the innovations driving the delivery on site and cost savings. The highlight of the study will be the discussion of the defueling and decommissioning of the Magnox sites, as well as focus on Bradwell, where the waste management strategy played a vital part of achieving Care & Maintenance' status in 2018, a UK nuclear industry first.
