Fluoride Salt-Mixtures: Advances and Technological Gaps

Abstract

Fluoride salt-mixtures, in the context of their relevance to molten salt reactors (MSR) including Terrestrial Energy Inc.'s IMSR400, are discussed in this paper. Key fluoride salt properties important for the MSR design development, such as structural characteristics, thermodynamic and thermo-physical properties, redox behavior, chemical activity, as well as behavior of fission products are described. The significant technological gaps are identified and potential paths forward are proposed.
