New Small Modular and Advanced Reactor Fire Protection Design and Operational Considerations

Abstract

With the increased focus on small modular reactors (SMR's) and advanced reactors in Canada, specific fire protection design aspects are required to be considered. This paper will discuss potential design challenges and potential efficiencies, as well as differences compared to current nuclear power plant (NPP) designs with respect to protection from fire. This paper will address fire protection design requirements as well as operational and fire response considerations. This abstract is considered most relevant to the Safety and Risk Assessment and Licensing (Program Track #1).
