Abstract

Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd. (Hitachi-GE) has developed a conceptual design of the Double MS: Modular Simplified & Medium Small reactor (DMS). The DMS is a 300MWe-class small-tomedium sized boiling water reactor (BWR), which has been estimated to almost completely overcome the economy-of-scale disadvantage of the proven conventional advanced BWR (ABWR) technologies. In order to enhance the DMS thermal efficiency and public acceptability, the University of Saskatchewan, Hitachi-GE and Hitachi, Ltd. (Hitachi) have collaborated on a joint R&D initiative study of a co-generation system and an enhanced safety system for the DMS. The enhanced safety system of the DMS is a hybrid system that consists of active and passive systems; the active systems are mainly used for design basis accidents and the passive systems are mainly used for design extension conditions. In this paper, the enhanced safety system concept developed for the DMS and its preliminary analysis results are presented.
