Abstract

In November 2017, Terrestrial Energy Inc. (TEI) has completed Phase 1 pre-licensing review of its Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR400) under the CNSC’s Vendor Design Review (VDR) process. TEI was thus the first SMR / advanced reactor vendor to enter the pre-licensing process in Canada and first SMR / advanced reactor to have its design assessed by the CNSC. The completion of VDR Phase 1 allowed TEI to move boldly forward onto the next stage of development. The outcome of the Phase 1 VDR review of the 400MWth fluoride-based molten salt cooled thermal reactor, has demonstrated TEI’s understanding of CNSC design and safety analysis requirements, and its intention to comply with such requirements and CNSC expectations. It also revealed that alternate approaches in meeting some of the requirements that are not applicable to the characteristics of the IMSR400 will be employed, with adequate justification. This paper provides highlights of the IMSR400 VDR Phase 1.
