Demonstration SMR Site and Demonstration Remote Community

Abstract

The development of SMR technologies to provide a safe, reliable, and affordable source of electricity for remote off-grid communities has been accelerating over the last few years. To effectively market these technologies to remote communities, it will be required to construct and license a First-Of-A-Kind demonstration reactor to show that the reactor technology is safe and reliable.Pinawa is the host community for AECL’s Whiteshell Laboratories, currently being decommissioned. The licensed site has many assets including the possibility of being licensed again for a Small Reactor. The community of Pinawa is prepared to be the Demonstration Remote Community. Pinawa would be powered by the SMR and the project would include other facilities, such as a greenhouse operation to grow fresh produce, to show that an SMR project would not only provide safe, reliable, and affordable power, it will also enhance the quality of life of remote communities.
