Abstract

Radiation was inadvertedly discovered over a century ago and its adverse effects began to be studied over the decades. It is now known that radiation can be detrimental depending on the dose imparted on the recipient in producing latent cancer. But some characteristics of radiation can be put to beneficial use. This paper enumerates the effects of ionizing radiation, the damage it can/may cause, its effect on the DNA, its toxicity to organic material, how to harness its effect for human benefit and for useful purposes. There are successful countermeasures in the detection and avoidance that are adopted to be safe from the harmful effects.
