Abstract

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) could radically alter the world market for nuclear energy. They cover a broad range of energy outputs, opening opportunities to meet the needs for small electricity grids, enable greater distribution on larger grids and to supply electricity and/or heat for remote communities, industry and resource extraction. Modularity will reduce capital costs and construction times, making nuclear an affordable option in these new markets. Traditionally, the nuclear sector has been optimized for operation of large reactors on a few secure sites. The SMR deployment model would see many SMRs in operation at many locations for many customers. This many/many/many scenario requires a paradigm shift in the industry’s approach to many issues including notably engagement. The new scenarios for SMR deployment in Canada are presented and the paradigm changes needed to support these new scenarios are discussed.
