Abstract

Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) is widely recognized as an important mechanism that can limit the reliable operation of equipment and systems. Given the high pressure and flow conditions in both the primary and secondary loops, nuclear plants are vulnerable to these effects. The requirements of high reliability and safety of the systems in nuclear power plants make the understanding and prevention of failures due to FAC of particular importance. One such area of concern in CANDU plants is feeder wall thinning due to FAC as reactor operation approaches the design life of the plant. This paper summarizes the present status of research on developing predictive models on feeder wall thinning, and discusses approaches for developing a predictive model for the reactors at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.
